Walking: Enjoy Yourself to Better Health
Do you feel low on energy, but don’t feel like working out? Would you like to lose weight but don’t want to do strenuous exercise? Well, there’s a simple solution to your problems: try walking.
Walking is a great way to exercise for anyone, and especially people who are older, have weight problems, or lower back issues (generally). It is a low impact movement, and is great for your overall fitness. It is also a good way to burn calories, without overexerting yourself.
Personally, I have a lower back condition that prevents me from running, or playing active sports. Walking has been very helpful in maintaining my weight, and minimizing lower back pain.
There are all kinds of places to go walking, and you can try different areas to keep it from becoming too boring. Make sure to bring a drink with you, to stay hydrated, especially outdoors, in the summer.
My favorite places to go walking:
Local parks
State parks
Hiking trails (wooded ones are shaded in the summer)
Strip malls
Indoor malls (great in the summer and winter)
Downtown squares
Residential streets
College campuses
Beaches
So there you are: walking is a simple activity that you can try in many different places. And, like any type of exercise, you can start slowly, with short distances, and build your strength and endurance, to walking faster and farther. You can enjoy the scenery, as well, depending on where you are at. So get out, enjoy yourself, and improve your health, by walking!
